NEWFOREX Stakeholder Workshop in Copenhagen

The NEWFOREX consortium is in its third year and has completed a major data collection effort on its key research questions. This stakeholder workshop will provide the opportunity to present to relevant pan-European stakeholders an early introduction of priliminary results and of some main messages for policy and practice from this project. Furthermore, this event will also serve to exchange views on how to bring results effectively to relevant end users. The key objectives addressed by the project and by the workshop are:

  1. Improving methods for valuing forest ecosystem services with specific attention given to the question: Who benefits from the provision of these ecosystem services?
  2. Methods for assessing the cost of provision of forest externalities, as seen from the forest owner as well as the society’s perspective.
  3. Develop and assess market-based methods for enhancing the provision of forest externalities, like payment schemes, certification or (re-)definition of property rights.

The workshop will take place on October 11th at the University of Copenhagen. The event can only be attended upon invitation.

4th NEWFOREX meeting

The fourth NEWFOREX project meeting will be held between 15-17 June 2011 in Helsinki (Finland).

The aim of the meeting is to revise the work conducted in the first 18 months of the project, and to plan the activities for the comming period. Special attention will be put on the upcoming forest owner data collection.

The meeting participation is restricted to project partners.

NEWFOREX project progress update

NEWFOREX project partners met over the challenges of the implementation of valuation of forest externalities in the case study areas

Forest externalities are those forest goods and services which are not actively marketed, but which are also valuable other people than the forest owners. Often these externalities include biodiversity, erosion protection and recreation – externalities that we know to be valuable, but the value of which is difficult to assess. This makes it also difficult to promote them and to offer the forest owners incentives to do so.

Can we contribute to the increase of societies' welfare by developing new ways to enhance the provision of such forest goods and services? This and similar questions are the focus of the NEWFOREX project (New Ways to Value and Market Forest Externalities).

In their second project meeting in Barcelona, NEWFOREX partners discussed the progress on the preparation of background information for the development of valuation questionnaires. These be applied for the valuation of main forest externalities in selected case study areas.

At this stage the NEWFOREX project focuses on the development of new methods that will enable the valuing of forest externalities and will handle the jointly produced externalities in an integrated way.

More details about the NEWFOREX project can be found at the projects website (http://www.newforex.org).

NEWFOREX project meeting was held on June 17 -18 2010 in Barcelona (Spain).
